Petar Kodas, Guitarist

Petar Kodzas comes from a musical family. His grandfather was sent to Brussels to study textile technology and without knowledge of his family switched to music! Petar was guided toward a career in mechanical engineering until he discovered a 19th century parlor guitar in his grandfather’s closet. It was a love on first sight! Before graduating from University of Belgrade, he toured and recorded on lute with an early music ensemble, played over 100 shows at the professional musical theatre, sat in jazz sessions, and performed around former Yugoslavia as a musical ambassador for an international organization Jeuness Musicales. Following his studies in Europe, Petar moved to United States. After school, competitions, concerts, more school, competitions and concerts he settled in the New York State. Since 1997 he is a faculty member at his alma mater the University of Rochester’s Eastman School of Music and Eastman Community Music School.

Facts:
- By the age of 30 Petar had 36 years of formal education! That includes two majors in high school (regular and special music high school), double degree in college (Music and Art History), Masters from Ithaca College and Doctorate from Eastman School of Music University of Rochester.

- Those who helped him most (and lived through to tell) include: “mama” Nada Kondic, beloved guitar pedagogue from Serbia; Vera Ogrizovic, soul and mind of Belgrade Music Academy; Edward Flower, a real poet of guitar from Ithaca College and Nicholas Goluses of Eastman School of Music, volcano of positive energy and support.

- Petar is a prize winner in Orpheus Competition, and National Music Competitions in Yugoslavia (1988). He was a semi-finalist in Naumburg Competition (1996).

- As a clinician he presented for American String Teachers Association, Guitar Foundation of America, College Music Society and New York State School Music Association Conference.

- He presented concerts, master-classes and adjudicated competitions at following festivals: Guitar Foundation of America Festival and Competition, Ithaca Winter Guitar Fest, Eastman Guitar Fest, Rantucci International Guitar Festival and Competition, Alexandria Guitar Festival, Guitarart Festival (Belgrade, Serbia) and Summer Guitarart Festival (Herceg-Novi, Montenegro).

- Petar’s teaching posts include: Ithaca College, Hochstein Music School, St. John Fisher College, Finger Lakes Community College, Nazareth College, Eastman Community Music School and Eastman School of Music.
